There is much to see and do in Montevideo. In 1878, the Chicago Milwaukee & St Paul Railroad brought immigrants to this community to help settle the frontier. An 11-foot-tall statue of Uruguay’s hero of independence, Joe Artigas, stands prominently in downtown Montevideo’s main street to celebrate the relationship with their sister city, the South American city of Montevideo Uruguay. The historic downtown is well preserved with many sites keeping their outer facades intact.
New public art projects celebrate the community’s connection to Uruguay, agriculture and the railroad.
Catch a glimpse of history with through the National Register buildings: JA Weaver House, Charles Budd House, the Swensson Farm, the Lac qui Parle Mission, the Railroad Depot, the Carnegie Library, the Chippewa City Bank Building and the Henry Gippe farmstead.
