The Milwaukee Road Heritage Depot includes a historic depot, railroad equipment, memorabilia and a working rail yard complete with a turntable.
Beginning in 1992 as the Minn-Kota Railroad Historical Society, the Milwaukee Heritage Depot was formed by a group of local railroad lovers and history enthusiasts who wanted to preserve the history of the railroads in western Minnesota. The group focused its efforts on preserving the history of The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad, more commonly known as The Milwaukee Road. The railroad played a major role in the development of Montevideo in the late 19th century.
Outside the depot is a railroad car with a mural of historic railroad images. The artist Lilliana Payne created the mural in 2016. The Milwaukee Road Heritage continues to develop the grounds for additional historic railroad projects.
