Henderson is a historic river town founded in 1852 by Joseph R. Brown. With historic sites, parks and events like Sauerkraut Days (an annual event since 1930), Henderson is a bustling town. Henderson’s Main Street is a nationally registered historic district, comprised of vintage buildings of locally made brick including the 1879 Sibley County Courthouse, which houses the Henderson City offices. Henderson was the Sibley County seat until 1915 when the offices were moved to Gaylord.
Henderson has a well-developed historic district with many festivals, including a classic car roll-ins. Nearby travelers enjoy an extensive zip line development, kayaking opportunities and hiking.
After the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, the 1,700 Dakota men, women, and children who were forced to go in a military convoy from Lower Sioux Agency to Fort Snelling, were brought through Henderson, where they were mobbed by enraged local whites. Dakota history interpretive panels are located at the north edge of Henderson, along the Scenic Byway, Sibley County Road 6.
