The Dakota named the river to the south of Granite Falls Peżihutazizi’api (“where they dig the yellow medicine”) in reference to that river’s abundant plant with a yellow root that the Dakota used for medicinal purposes. The river is known today as the Yellow Medicine River, which the county and the county museum was named for.
